LIGHT & SHADOW
Learning to See
Light can transform almost anything.
It can reveal structure, simplify a complex scene, create tension or turn an ordinary subject into something extraordinary. Shadow can conceal as much as it reveals, giving an image depth, rhythm and atmosphere.
With this project, I want to explore the relationship between light, shadow and photographic expression.
Rather than starting with a particular subject or location, I want to become more attentive to the light itself. How does the direction of light influence a composition? When does contrast strengthen an image, and when does it become a distraction? How much detail is necessary — and what happens when I deliberately leave things in shadow?
I want to experiment, make mistakes, question my decisions and learn to recognize the potential of a scene before I press the shutter.
There are no limitations on location, subject or equipment. Light and shadow are the connecting elements, whether I find them in architecture, urban spaces, landscapes or the smallest details around me.
This project may also influence the other two. What I learn about light, tonal relationships and reduction at Melaten or elsewhere in Cologne will inevitably shape the way I approach other photographs.
For me, this is not simply a study of light.
It is an attempt to understand how light can become a language — and how I can learn to speak it through my images.
Learning to see beyond the subject.
