01 – The Beginning
Sometimes a photographic journey doesn’t begin with a new image, but with a new question.
After a longer period away from photography, I have reached a point where I am once again thinking more deeply about how I actually want to see.
During that time, my perspective on photography has changed. Today, I am less interested in simply producing technically perfect images. What matters much more to me is what I see, why I want to photograph it, and what I want an image to communicate.
I want to train, strengthen, and further develop my photographic way of seeing.
At the same time, I want to push my creativity again and get it moving. Not through pressure or the goal of producing as many images as possible, but through curiosity, observation, experimentation, and the willingness to look at things again and again.
This has led me to the idea of starting three long-term photographic projects.
Three projects that could hardly be more different, yet may influence and inspire each other along the way.
The first will take me back to one particular place again and again.
The second will explore the city I live in – and, more importantly, how I see it.
The third is not tied to a specific place at all. Instead, it focuses on something that can play a role in any image:
Light and shadow.
I deliberately don’t want to give these projects a fixed duration.
No challenge.
No minimum number of images.
No deadline.
No predetermined result.
Maybe I won’t photograph anything for one of the projects for weeks. Maybe twenty images will emerge in a single day.
Maybe I will only have my phone with me.
Then my phone becomes the camera.
Because if a moment catches my attention strongly enough that I want to preserve it, I don’t want to dismiss it simply because I don’t have my camera with me.
The same applies to the images themselves.
I don’t want to decide too quickly whether an image is „good“ or „important.“ Some images may only reveal their significance with time.
Perhaps that is the most interesting part of this journey:
Not knowing today where it will lead.
And then, one day, looking back and realizing what has changed – both in my images and in the way I see.
Three projects. Three different paths.
But perhaps they all lead toward the same goal:
discovering and developing my own photographic “Vision.”
And that is where my journey begins.
Next week, I return to Melaten.

Hallo Andreas,
Andreas
